Microbiology and Microbial Biotechnology

Microbiology is the science that discusses microorganisms or microscopic organisms. The goal of microbiology is to identify microscopic organisms and use them to improve human life and to prevent the damage that microorganisms can do to human, animal and plant life. Microbiology is an applied science that is closely related to many branches of science. These include genetics, medicine, cell biology, parasitology, medical mycology and biochemistry. The Faculty of Life Sciences and Biotechnology of Shahid Beheshti University (SBU) offers microbiology in three levels: bachelor’s, master’s and doctorate. The master's program was established earlier than other programs in 1995; the bachelor's program in 2005 and the doctorate program in 2009. In this department, microbiology knowledge is taught in two aspects: basic and applied concepts. Microorganisms are an integral part of human life in three forms: peaceful coexistence, beneficial use and pathogenicity. Recognizing this from different perspectives and managing microorganisms towards controlling pollution and using their products to improve human living conditions is one of the priorities of microbiology education in this department. Microbiology has a wide variety in various scientific fields, including food microbiology, medicine, environment, industry and virology, with which students are introduced at the bachelor’s level. At present, Dr. Dariush Minaei Tehrani is the head of the Department of Microbiology and Microbial Biotechnology.
